More about The Travelers
Spider Gilliam - acoustic bass, vocals
Raised in southern Virginia, Spider experimented with different types of music in his early adulthood, but soon found his niche in Bluegrass music and was hooked. After playing with several local groups, he formed Harvest, one of the most recognized and followed groups in the area. When the group disbanded, he accepted a position with the Country Gentlemen. Spider can be heard on several of The Country Gentlemen recordings including Calling My Children Home. After leaving the Gents, he played with West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd and made several appearances on The Grand Old Opry and Hee-haw. Spider now resides in Keysville, Virginia,
Kevin Church - banjo, vocals
Son of the great banjo picker, Porter Church, Kevin carries on the tradition as a hard-driving banjo player with a love of traditional music. Kevin began his professional career with The Spirits of Bluegrass. He later working with Paul Adkins and Borderline, Jerry McCoury's band, and the Country Gentlemen. In 1990 he was invited to the White House to perform at President Bush's Easter Concert. With a great smile and friendly manner, he's a favorite with Bluegrass music fans at home and abroad. Kevin lives in Northern Virginia where he devotes most of his time to family, friends and music.
Norman Wright - mandolin, vocals
Norman, who now lives in northern Virginia, began his professional music career playing with The Bluegrass Cardinals. After three years with the Cardinals, he and Spider worked with Senator Robert Byrd doing campaigns, the Grand Ole Opry and Hee-Haw. After a brief hiatus he joined the Country Gentlemen. After leaving the Gents he freelanced and toured with Bill Harrell, Bill Clifton, Paul Adkins and Borderline and others until he and Kevin formed the Wright/Church Band. Norman is a prolific songwriter; Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, the Country Gentlemen, the Bluegrass Cardinals, IIIrd Tyme Out and others have recorded his songs, His schedule includes songwriting, producing and recording band projects at The Wright Place Studio in Falls Church, Virginia.
Jason Owen - guitar, vocals
Jason grew up in the shadows of a banjo picking daddy on the North Carolina/Virginia line, where bluegrass music was a way of life. Under the watchful eye of his dad and long-time friend Spider Gilliam, he developed his considerable talents, and became one of the most sought after young pickers in the area. A fine band from Eastern Virginia soon recognized his abilities, and Jason became a member of Heritage. After several years he became restless and wanted to spread his wings. He freelanced for a couple of years, writing and playing with different bands. In 1996 he accepted a position with Norman and Kevin, playing guitar and singing lead. Soon after, with the addition of Spider Gilliam, The Travelers band was formed. Jason now makes his home in Cape May, New Jersey, but plans to return to his hills of home in Roxboro, North Carolina in May, 1999.
The Travelers band is anxious to travel anywhere in the world to present their exciting act.
